Advantages of being deaf

        1.  I can sleep soundly through the night no matter how noisy it is since I cannot hear anything.   Especially when it is lightning and thundering over night, I don't hear any of it, when I am sleeping.

         2. If I don't want to listen to what someone is saying, I can just turn off my hearing aids and that will solve the problem.

         3. Some people tell me it's cool that I know sign language and they are asking to learn it.

  1. Susana: Thanks for sharing this. There are advantages! It is nice to see this optimism as so many get limited by the pessimism of "disadvantages". I have a similar thing when I visit foreign countries as a rambling poet ( I am in China right now). True, I cannot turn off my hearing, but I can say I am sorry I do not know what you are saying and do not understand you. ;-) Have a great week and I am glad to be your friend here!

  3. Yeah! My dad used to take out his hearing aid when he'd heard enough. He was a champion of reading people's faces anyway. Didn't really need to hear them and could judge a person's character just by watching them. We kids couldn't get away with anything.

  4. Really, I used to do that sometimes. Sounds like you have a smart father. :)

  5. Another advantage: when I'm speaking with a non-native English speaker, even though I hear them fine, if I have trouble understanding them because of their accent, I politely blame it on the fact I am hard of hearing and ask them to repeat! So I can avoid leaving the person feeling insulted with their poor English.
